ATSC 3.0 becomes the foundation for new content delivery services
New real-world applications grow on the capabilities of the NextGen TV
2020 sees further development of new ATSC 3.0-based services in the United States. Along with unique features, there is one common very important aspect - remaining local.
Evoca, a Boise, Idaho start up, uses two lower-power stations to delivery subscription-based premium TV channels. For all live events and high demand shows, Evoca uses ATSC 3.0 broadcast. For other less-watched content, the company employs broadband wired technology.
Gray TV and Meredith presented VUit streaming service featuring more than 200 stations. It is an ad-supported model "aiming to be the Netflix of live, local, and free", Jack Perry, Syncbak CEO, a company partnered to launch the service.
Sinclair Broadcast Group, one of the most active proponents of the NextGen TV, introduced STiRR service in 2019 featuring 121 channels of ad-supported content and with ATSC 3.0 broadcast for live local programs including sport events and an archive of previous episodes of major shows. "ATSC 3.0 is 'inherently' local", says Adam Ware, STiRR General Manager.
